Promoting microbial adhesion to surfaces? Materials are mostly designed to prevent attachment and growth of microbes. We propose the opposite; to create materials that encourage microorganisms to attach and thrive on. In this work we guide and adhere cellulose-producing bacteria into attachment to control the architecture of bacterial cellulose biofilms used for biomedical applications. Our conformal bacterial cellulose coatings are biocompatible and lubricious while perfectly fitting around any shape and material.
